Dominating Newport’s skyline for over a hundred years, its towers soaring 74 metres above the hustle and bustle of modern Newport, the Transporter Bridge is a much loved city landmark, and is the venue for GOGC’s Abseil Challenge 2008.

For those aged 16 and over who are looking for adventure,  the  abseil will be from the end of the beam of the bridge on the west bank of the Usk, with the descent being a mere 54m (177ft) above the ground (yes, the ground, not the river, so swimming ability not required).  You will land in the car park at the visitor centre to a tumultuous round of applause from admiring onlookers, who will tactfully pretend that they didn’t hear you screaming when you had to go over the edge at the top. GOGC staff will whisk you away for a cup of tea and fend off the paparazzi that mistook you for a celebrity. If required, we can build in a few minutes for you to sign autographs or be sick in a bucket.

The technical expert at the top, who will cheerfully encourage you over the edge is Mike Herbert, qualified and very experienced climbing and abseiling instructor, with a belt and braces approach to safety.  Mike is skilled at giving a last minute confidence boost to participants who get the collywobbles (that won’t be you of course).

GOGC will have a further five technical staff on hand to kit you up in your harness and helmet and teach you a few choruses of any Queen song to suit your mood eg ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’,  ‘ I Want to Break Free’, ‘Another One Bites the dust’

The crew of ‘White Watch’ from Malpas Fire Station will be taking time out of their busy day to come along and give a rescue demonstration – hurrah!
